"I don't need to recount the sad story of the "lateral" and subsequent Titans touchdown return in the Bill's- Titan's AFC wildcard playoff game. However I would like to suggest that the video and still images could be deceiving.

The picture below shows how a pass that appears to be a lateral, (or to even be a little bit in the backward direction) could actually be a forward pass. The "lateral" took place on the Titan's 25 yard line and the camera that provided the "definitive" replay images seemed to be located at about the 20 yard line or thereabout, judging from the angle of the 25 yard line in the photos. The other key piece of information is that when the ball was released it was probably about 6 feet in the air and when it was caught it was about 1 foot off the playing surface. In the simple geometric construction below the trajectory of the ball is the blue line. If you view this path against the background of the 25 yard line it appears to be a legal lateral. However, if you project the path of the ball down onto the playing surface (the red line) you see that the ball actually advances upfield - so the apparent "lateral" was really a forward pass.

To make a definitive determination of the legality of the "lateral" one would need to know the precise location of the camera that took the replay video and in the absence of such information this analysis is subject to revision. However this does suggest that images can be deceiving."
