Myk Murphy:
my response was to orange's comment regarding US gazing at shoes. we need better shoes here, perhaps.

Myk Murphy:
the fact that The Replacements weren't the best-known, best-loved band in america... that, my friends, was the greatest tragedy of all.

orange:
Alternative didn't become mainstream. Nirvana were on Geffen, hardly an indie. The fashion changed, which is the way of fashion. Indie is still there, you have to look for it, that's why it's indie! There are still loads of small american labels making great records. Over here Alternative Country was big for a while and you couldn't move for Uncle Tupelo soundalikes. The scene moved on and now punk is the new punk. There are still alternative/indie labels doing what they did before. It's cyclical.

Heruka:
I suppose you're right. I'm probably getting older also so I don't notice things as before. Or perhaps it was the way I lived my life back then. I no longer live like that. I've changed, not the scene. Old age. I'm even wearing less music t's than I used to. I'll never sport a suit or polo shirt though. Not today, not tommorrow. Not when I'm dead. Must remain cool.

orange:
and with that, i'm off to see the Posies, another of the ones that should have been huge.
(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:10:50 pm)

Heruka:
Adios.

Chewing Wax:
was that orange?
(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:16:11 pm)

Heruka:
I believe so. I have no reason to think otherwise.
(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:16:53 pm)

Myk Murphy:
yeah, it's funny how cowpunk/alt country did so well over there, but it almost fell on deaf ears here. yeah, we still have great indie labels, but again, it comes back to getting the message out. college radio died violently, and with that, the best avenue for the indie scene to actually affect the outside world. sure, you can play your ass off to small clubs forever, and that's cool. with the death of good radio, however, the fringes cannot affect the mainstream center. kids without cool older siblings will never ever know of this world. (ok, i'll try posting this again.)
(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:17:37 pm)

Myk Murphy:
sorry, my cable modem lost its mojo. had to wiggle the wires. good luck with the posies. yeah, that was certainly orange.
(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:19:04 pm)

Chewing Wax:
did college radio die violently? I completely missed that.
(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:19:51 pm)

Heruka:
"cowpunk/alt country"? Like rockabilly? I've picked up on that there's more of those type things.
(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:19:57 pm)

Myk Murphy:
no, it's a broad thing spanning all bands that use a country & western sound while not singing about trucks. southern rock meets literacy... that sort of thing. The Silos, The Jayhawks, The Handsome Family, Vic Chesnut, Neil Young (at times).
(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:22:52 pm)

Myk Murphy:
Uncle Tupelo/ Son Volt is another decent example. perhaps the best example. folks who took REM's 1st few albums and ran with them.
(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:24:19 pm)

Heruka:
Oh. I'm thing like Hellboung Hayride, The Cowslingers and such. Amix of Stray Cats and Hank Williams Sr.

(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:26:32 pm)

Myk Murphy:
yeah, those retro singing cowboy bands are kinda cool.
(Wed Nov 29, 2000 - 2:29:32 pm)

Heruka:
Yes. Cool. I've read an article recently about the music scene. It noted that the internet has taken an extremely large chunk out of the industry. Kids who are now sitting at computers would otherwise be buying cd's and jammin with their friends in their parent's garages. Strangely, I think the internet has had an opposite effect on me. It's now easier to find out about good bands than it used to be. I listen to more music now than I did during the mid-90s. It's just there. Like candy at the counter of a convience store. Oh well. O

The Posies did a few Big Star songs last night. I'd forgotten that they play in the band these days. Mean version of 'Thirteen', especially as they'd had 4 tequilas by then. The Mats never did much for me, but they left their mark

Was Ken still unnaturally smooth?
(Thu Nov 30, 2000 - 6:04:48 am)

orange:
Ken was flirting with the sound girl and and the girls in the support band, in fact, every girl there. The women love him. His hair was strangely muted, 'autumnally follicled' summed it up. He can sure knock back the Tequila
