my block shares one of those big metal locking mailboxes, you know? anyway I just walked passed it while taking sidney and her friend to school and saw that it was jimmied open with like a crowbar or something and all the mail inside was gone. Fortunately I'd already collected mine yesterday afternoon, but I wonder where they're going to put our mail until the box is replaced. I'm expecting some checks today.

I'm taking care of sidney's friend before and after school for a few weeks. she just moved kinda far but her mom didn't want to make her switch schools with only a month left, so she brings her here at 5am. the mom has really been through some shit. her husband's in the hospital dealing with his anger management problems, she just moved her three kids into a trailer park far away, and she has to commute like two hours every day to some crap job. she puts up with a lot more than I could ever handle. and she's always friendly and smiling. if I were her, I'd be snarling at everyone.

I find the saga of sidney's friend's family sort of depressing, because they're such hard working folks, but they still can't rise above the poverty despite that. proof that you can work your ass off and STILL end up in a trailer. I can remember when the mom got fired a week before christmas from a machine factory job she'd had since forever, and she was right out there getting another job right away. I mean, they are NOT lazy or irresponsible people in any way, yet they are just trapped at this level they may never rise above. it really makes me feel sort of sad and hopeless.
