ferns?
(Thu May 6, 2004 - 1:38:19 pm)
:
TYPICAL POISONING SCENARIO:
Accidental consumption of bracken fiddleheads, which look very similar to those of the OSTRICH FERN (Matteucia
struthiopteris). The Ostrich Fern is the only Nova Scotian species which is edible, NOT carcinogenic, and therefore the only
one of which you can really regard as frondly. Commercially grown & harvested fiddleheads are all OSTRICH FERN and
therefore safe, but fanciers of wild fiddleheads should exercise great caution so as to avoid gathering dangerous species.
SYMPTOMS:
Acute poisoning from these ferns is unlikely; their effect is cumulative, and eventually produces a variety of internal cancers.
Repeated ingestions significantly increase the likelihood of developing disease; in Japan, where BRACKEN FERN
FIDDLEHEADS are traditionally consumed as food, scientists attribute the high incidence of stomach cancer to the popularity
of this risky vegetable.

Just like mushrooms, you have to trust the store you buy them from I guess. They better be ostrich fern fiddleheads. Delicious. I saute them in olive oil with a little salt and pepper and toss them with some penne. No more penne though. It's full of the gluten.

Truckload Of Monkey Waste Closes Milwaukee:
MILWAUKEE -- Two busy highways in Milwaukee are open again after being closed for about four hours by a spill of monkey droppings and algae Tuesday. The smelly mixture was being trucked from the Milwaukee County Zoo to be spread on a golf course. A zoo spokeswoman said, "From a scale of one to 10, the smell's an eleven." The accident happened when a latch broke on a tank holding the dark, sludge-like waste. The mixture had been removed from a crap moat. The droppings were then "aged" for two days to destroy any viruses before being loaded into the hapless truck.

Fortress re-opens after stinging attack:
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - A 5th-century fortress that's one of Sri Lanka's top tourist attractions reopened Wednesday, days after a rampaging swarm of wasps attacked visitors and forced it to close. Several hundred tourists from Sri Lanka and abroad were rushed to hospitals with swollen lips and limbs after the raging insects struck on Saturday at the Sigiriya fortress, a World Heritage Site about 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of the capital, Colombo. Officials believe the wasps were provoked when visiting school children hurled stones at one of their nests. Saffron-robed Buddhist monks lit hundreds of oil lamps and incense sticks at the site on Tuesday and chanted prayers to incinerate the insects.
But numerous wasps were still hovering in the area, and parts of the monument remained off-limits to
visitors. There are about a dozen wasp nests at the site, said Thilak Dunuwilla, the government's chief
research officer in the area.
"We are hoping they will settle down soon, so that we can reopen the fortress fully," he said, noting that this
is the site's busiest time of year. Predominantly Buddhist Sri Lanka is currently celebrating the Vesak
festival, which marks the Buddha's birth, death and enlightenment.
Dunuwilla said the scale of Saturday's wasp attack was unprecedented at the site, though two or three
visitors had been stung in the past.
