actually, many of the insurgants in Iraq right now came directly from Iran, which is why they've sent people in there to negotiate things, as they are also dealing with these ultra-fanatical types led by one Muqtada al-Sadr. the WSJ had an article on it yesterday. all that is going on it Iraq was predicted by the Italian intelligence agency Sismi, even before Iraq war began. it's as much as a regional conflict as a push to get America out.

these events are not exactly news flashes to american troops. it was well known that poor shiites would be prone to rebellion, and many "suddenly disenfranchised" sunnis were in a constant state of rebellion for the past year. it's only a minor surprise that both groups would act up around the same time, but if these groups want to be cannon fodder in order to do the US a favor by thinning their own ranks, so be it. strategically, the insurgents are screwing themselves royally.

in terms of real control over iraq, very little has changed. love or hate the war, most iraqis are optimistic about the future, and most are doing pretty well, relatively speaking.
