I have to decide whether to cancel the foreign language classes tonight. It's snowing pretty hard, but fuck, it's Buffalo. The southern belle hoop skirt wearing canopy bed sleeping mayor might cancel everything, but no one is being forced to attend. I'm keeping the place open. Only the tough learn German.

Tim Hortons is a Canada-wide chain of coffee shops named after Tim Horton, who played hockey for the Buffalo Sabres. Horton had also played for Pittsburg, New York and Toronto.

On February 20th, 1974, Horton, 44, was in Toronto playing the Toronto Maple Leafs at Maple Leaf Gardens. The Sabres lost 4-2 and Horton played only in the first and second periods, sitting out the third with a sore jaw he had suffered in a game against Pittsburgh. He still played well enough to be named the game's 3rd star.

After the game Horton met briefly with Punch Imlach, Head Coach and General Manager of the Sabres. Horton then either drove to Hamilton (about 45 minutes west of Toronto), or stayed in Toronto for the night to visit family.

On the morning of the 21st, Horton was driving alone in his car to Buffalo for a practice. He was travelling very fast (over 100 MPH) and was on painkillers when he lost control and crashed into a median guardrail on the Queen Elizabeth Way near the Lake Street exit in St. Catharines. He died instantly.

Horton was driving a yellow Pantera. Imlach had promised him the car as a signing bonus in his last contract.

The loss devastated the Sabres. The next night they were playing the Atlanta Flames, and players were lined up on the blue line wearing black armbands and crying openly. Horton's No. 2 was retired in ceremonies at the Aud in 1995-96.
