"virginia gentlemen" sounds gay? geez, wax, i'm trying to give a needy northerner free advice on bourbon. as you can imagine, it's a local bourbon.
(Fri Feb 20, 2004 - 4:45:06 pm)

Myk Murphy:
bourbon is the only true "american" spirit distilled. it is our whiskey. here's a quote i found on VG...
-------------
The company--like A. Smith Bowman--remains one of the nation's few family-owned distilleries. Before the sale, A. Smith Bowman was the country's oldest and smallest family-owned bourbon distillery.

The owners of Buffalo Trace--the Goldring family--have a history with liquor that dates back to the late 1800s. Then, they bottled spirits to ship to dry counties in Alabama, Brown said.

Bowman Distillery was founded by Bowman and his two sons in 1935 in Fairfax County. It moved to its Spotsylvania location in 1987.

Last spring, Bowman Distillery brought home two gold medals for its Virginia Gentlemen 90 Proof Small Batch Bourbon during the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The bourbon landed silver medals in both the 2000 and 2001 competitions.

Myk Murphy:
drinking tequila is more civilized than drinking bourbon? your credibility is hereby questioned. it would be more accurate to say that drinking tequila is more civilized than drinking turpentine or kerosene.

vegas paul:
McCallan 18, that's the way to go
(Fri Feb 20, 2004 - 6:03:58 pm)

Chewing Wax:
How can it be bourbon if it isn't made in Bourbon county? And I drink way to fast to pony up the dough for McCallan 18.
(Fri Feb 20, 2004 - 6:08:21 pm)

Chewing Wax:
God help me I'm sticking to light beer tonight and no comments from Murphy.
(Fri Feb 20, 2004 - 6:09:27 pm)

Chewing Wax:
It took a comment like that for you to question Heruka's credibility?

Myk Murphy:
when it comes to questioning heruka's cred, i suppose i am a bit late to the party.

to answer the bourbon question, "bourbon" was initially an indicator that the whiskey came from a particular part of kentucky (an area now covering 34 counties), but it came to mean whiskey that wasn't rye whiskey, distilled further north. the shorthand became "bourbon". also, most bourbon has water of a similar character: water that has run over limestone, giving it a high calcium and generally yeast-friendly nature.
