Myk Murphy:
no one in the west has done a fabulous job of helping the world's poor. i honestly believe that increased globalization will help more people, rather than harm them. are their exploitative excesses when bringing industry to the 3rd world? absolutely. still, i think that most governments are on the right track to attempt to modernize more of the world. protesters would be more help to insist that living and working standards are kept up, rather than to vainly protest the globalization in general.

meanwhile, things are getting more interesting in iran. love or hate him, don't think that bush's forays into afghanistan and iraq aren't emboldening the reformers attempting to shake the yolk of the old guard. 100 of them just resigned in protest today. regular protests and such, and the US (or anyone else) doesn't have to lift a finger. at this rate, the clerics will lose their veto controls (and de facto controls) within a couple months.

(Sun Feb 1, 2004 - 3:01:11 pm)
Myk Murphy:
yeah, heruka, and birth rates in overpopulated areas are down when globalization comes to town. these folks are reaping real benefits. perhaps the anti-globalization folks have a romantic notion of the noble savage still stuck in their brains, but honestly, can the world move forward with so many stuck in the past?
the americans can't take all the credit, of course. european industry is just as involved, but somehow the US bears the brunt of the bad press.
pepto-bismol for that kid. stuff works wonders.

i had a neighbor from Eritrea, which broke away from Ethiopia a few years ago after decades of resistance. he had more than a few things to say about the "famines" in that land. most, he said, were engineered by the Ethiopian gov't. it's an act of political control.
