I've just booked two tickets for the Lloyd Cole and the Commotions-celebrating-the-release-of-Rattlesnakes-20 years ago-gig. Over sixty quid including the doughnut and coffee, sorry, service and postage charges. I don't recall paying quite that much when I saw them in 1984. Pah.

I saw an odd thing the other day. A small child on the train was sucking a lemon. And really enjoying it. Her mother had to wrench the poor shrivelled fruit carcass out of her hands with a promise to return it to her later. What's wrong with a big, healthy bar of chocolate?

perhaps that child was a descendant of a royal navy sailor from imperial Britain's heyday, instinctively warding off scurvy during the long train ride.
