Heruka:
ONE of the biggest Welsh movie stars in Hollywood kicked off a race storm last night after making anti-Muslim remarks.

Outraged Islamic leaders in Wales demanded an immediate apology from Lord Of The Rings actor John Rhys-Davies, who claimed an increase in Europe's Muslim population was a "demographic catastrophe" threatening "Western civilisation".

The 59-year-old Ammanford actor's comments were originally made in an interview with American journalists from World magazine, but this week they were used by the far right British National Party in a leaflet to campaign for support among cinema-goers.

Last night Rhys-Davies stood by his views which follow Robert Kilroy-Silk's inflammatory anti-Arab column. But he criticised the BNP for hijacking his words for their own ends.

In the interview, Rhys-Davies, who plays heroic dwarf Gimli and recorded the voice of computer-animated character Treebeard in the Hollywood blockbuster, interprets Tolkien's story of good versus evil as a metaphor for modern race relations.

He said: "There is a demographic catastrophe happening in Europe that nobody wants to talk about, that we daren't bring up because we are so cagey about not offending people racially. And rightly we should be. But there is a cultural thing as well.

"By 2020, 50 per cent of the children in Holland under the age of 18 will be of Muslim descent.

(Sun Jan 18, 2004 - 1:17:26 pm)

Chewing Wax:
I thought Catherine Zeta Jones Douglas was the biggest Welsh movie star in Hollywood. And she already hates the Muslims. Must be something in Wales.

(Sun Jan 18, 2004 - 4:59:24 pm)

Decoy:
Yes, Heruka is a Buddhist diety. Its easy to forget. In fact -what's funny is that Welker has totally stripped that word of its meaning. At least to me. Thanks, Heruka.
(Sun Jan 18, 2004 - 5:05:43 pm)

Heruka Chakrasamvara :
The 12-armed and 3-headed Heruka Chakrasamvara, the central deity of the mandala, embraced and in sexual union by his female consort, the red Vajravarahi. He wears a tiger skin, standing in the midst of wisdom flames, and tramples on two corpses. In his hands he holds various attributes, symbolizing his magical perfections. His main 2 arms hold vajra and gantha (cepter & bell), demonstrating, that he has overcome duality. As an emanation of the Buddha Akshobhya family (water-element), the deity transforms hate energy into enlightening wisdom. He is surrounded by (top): the three main Bodhisattvas Manjushri, Chenrezig, Vajrapani and (bottom): Palden Lhamo, Heruka Protector Deity and the Citipati skelleton dancers. There exist various forms of this deity, like the popular 2-armed emanation as seen at the background. - Heruka Chakrasamvara was the main deity of Lama Thubten Yeshe.

froupie's buddhist dad... how does that work during the holiday season?
(Sun Jan 18, 2004 - 5:45:36 pm)

Myk Murphy:
as insensitive as it is, i'm glad that the LOTR actors see how clearly the book/film corresponds to a cultural struggle. i almost laughed out loud when aragorn shouts "men of the west, unite!" and they started fighting the turbaned guys on the elephants. nothing subtle there.
(Sun Jan 18, 2004 - 5:47:38 pm)

Heruka:
me? a "know it all" on buddhism? nope. but I understand my culture enough to see how and which people act a cetain way within it. I know enough that when a white person goes to buddhism, it's less of a spiritual thing and more of a snub on western societies. of course, the "enlightened" individuals are the first to complain about social and cultural 'imperialism' when a christian movement happens in Asia. and there is a bg movement of christianity in Asia. in fact, many parts of India have outrighted banned the changing from the local religion to Christianity because of this. but don't get me started on that....
(Sun Jan 18, 2004 - 6:04:47 pm)

Heruka:
I used to know Decoys full name, but I forget, I only remember his first name now.
(Sun Jan 18, 2004 - 6:05:56 pm)
