you can eat amazing seafood in the suburbs of new orleans for a fraction of what you'd pay downtown. when in new orleans, take the free city ferry across the river to old algiers. cool houses to see there.
oh yeah, and go to la marquesa coffee/pastry shop in the french quarter.

mrs murphy and i might do a southern driving trip this spring. head down 95 to savannah, head up to charleston, myrtle, outer banks, then head home. not sure yet.
