Heruka:
Description
Historical South-side blues mecca once owned by Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. The Rolling Stones and Muddy Waters played together here during the '70s, and the occasion is well-documented with photographs inside. There's a great soul-food place just outside with an orange elephant on the roof. During the day the bar -- dark, with an eerie red light , torn linoleum floor and long narrow tables -- is filled with heavy drinkers enjoying the pleasantly decrepit 25-year-old room, but at night there are a good number of tourists, students from the nearby University of Chicago, and even the occasional rock star coming to see authentic South Side blues from regular performers like Vance Kelly and Magic Slim. The neighborhood is a little chancy, so go with a friend, but there is a secure parking lot across the street.
Directions
E. 43rd & State St. You can park for $3 in the lot across the street, or let the valets take it ($8!).
Hours
11am-2am, 11am-3am Saturday.

Heruka:
Chicago is ok, never spent much time there really. no more than a few days at a stretch I suppose.
(Tue Oct 28, 2003 - 8:01:56 pm)
Myk Murphy:
well, i've spent a bit more time in the 'burbs than i need to, but i have work stuff to get done in the evening that makes a night of drinking a little difficult.
(Tue Oct 28, 2003 - 8:29:15 pm)
Heruka:
if we left this fall as planned, I would be in Key West about now. getting ready to head to either the Marquases(in florida, not Polynesia) or to Cuba. but here I sit. how sad.

Myk Murphy:
Marriage is a wonderful thing, Heruka, but things never happen on time when you're hitched. it's not because of one's wife, really... i think it's just there's always something going on. it's a good problem to have.

Froupie:

(Wed Oct 29, 2003 - 10:18:53 am)
bela:
Huh? I don't think so. He sang a lot of his solo stuff that I don't know at all and Style Council stuff I recognized but didn't know the names of. His hair was so fucked up it looked like a blind person cut it with kindergarten scissors. We got to sit in the VIP section and his father and sister were there so Tom harrassed his father for awhile. Hes nice old guy though. It was not packed, our friend that works there told us they only sold like 700 tickets and that place fills 1200.

Yeah? Whats a hardnut? I know hes his manager since he started out as akid. I heard tom say to him "uh, I've listened to your son't music for over 25 years since I'm 13 years old" I was like, oh god. His father said "well you got good taste then". Heh.

Decoy:
Last night I fixed and figured out how to thread this old sewing machine we had in the attic. It was from the 30s and there were no instructions. I had to turn the motor core so the contacts and brushes worked. I really can't believe it worked, actually. Mrs. Decoy is making a poodle skirt for our daughter's hween costume. That old machine actually sewed. I can't believe how complicated they are to thread. With the feeder and the needle and the thread path and the bobbin and the hey hey hey...
(Wed Oct 29, 2003 - 11:07:39 am)
bela:
Yeah but thats awesome you got it to work. I wish I could sew. I was thinking of learning.
