Myk Murphy:
that's the secret so many restaurants don't know: give people a free hat when they buy food. roy rogers used to give kids a paper cowboy hat, but the parents didn't get crap.

PBS Show This Friday On Outsourcing :
This Friday, August 29th, PBS will air an important 1 hour show on outsourcing work to foreign countries:
"In the midst of steep economic recession and skyrocketing unemployment rates, more and more major American companies are cutting costs by outsourcing work to foreign countries.
Now, these exported jobs are taking their toll on college-educated and skilled professional workforce. With experts estimating that 3.3 million white-collar jobs will be sent overseas by 2015, is America's middle class being hollowed out?
On Friday, August 29, 2003 at 9PM on PBS
NOW goes to India where the country's skilled and educated workforce is answering customer and financial service calls and taking over technology positions for some of America's biggest corporations while millions of Americans search for jobs at home. "

Myk Murphy:
those fox hats are repulsive, and i'm not particularly anti-fur.

as for outsourcing, i'm of 2 minds on the topic. while i see outsourcing as a cheap way for firms to dodge investment in US workers, it appears that there will be both a skilled and unskilled worker shortage in the US in the next decade. purely demographic reasons: all the boomers are retiring, and the generation that follows is smaller. so, by that math (5 million skilled and 2 million unskilled deficit), a little outsourcing and a little more immigration may not be all that bad. i'm just not sure.

Heruka:
I used to be naive like Myk. but no more. where are these "defificts"? pumping gas? flipping burgers? we have 20 million illegals in this country, more immigration? we hagve jobs moving overseas right now by the tens of thousands every month. I think you're being blind and naive to what's really going on. perhaps a few years stint away from Washinton and plunge yourself into the private sector out in real America for a while will change your mind. but come on over, I'm sure those who live in communities devastated by NAFTA and outsourcing will be glad to hear about your "deficits".
it's not just the US Myk. it's happening everywhere. France and Germany have double digits unemployment, yet their manufacturing plants are moving to the third world countires also.
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 3:38:49 pm)

Chewing Wax:
Lighten up Francis. It will be fine. What's the alternative? Isolationism and huge tarrifs?
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 3:44:35 pm)

Myk Murphy:
while it may not have affected you directly, heruka, there was a point, around '99, when just about anyone who could sign their own name could get an IT job. it happened all over the country, but it was magnified around here and other boom areas. of course, service jobs went wanting, too, especially since lots of folks simply got better jobs during the feeding frenzy.

now we're looking at a bigger version of '99 coming over the horizon. it's nearly inevitable, really, due to the strain of sending all the whiney boomers off to retirement. and, of course, these lazy boomers won't work a day longer than they have to, so that's so much better for us. the "gen x" crowd (pardon the cliched term) looks like it may waltz into senior positions.

(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 3:48:59 pm)

Heruka:
sorry wax. it's not fine now. and it's getting worse. you can't simply ignore the thousands who lost jobs due to outsourcing and NAFTA and keep telling these people it will always be "fine". the social group I grew up in has been completely hammered in recent years. me, I'll be ok. but I'm watching this lower class lower middleclass types be wiped off the charts as far as lifestyle goes.

(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 3:49:56 pm)

Myk Murphy:
plenty of nafta casualties, heruka, no doubt about it. i'm not pleased with outsourcing IT, since it does little but overly strengthen rival countries. but, it may just work out. some folks will change industries, but plenty of industries can't outsource and will need to train whomever will work for them. at a respectable salary, i bet.

Heruka:
sorry Murphy, someone earning a tenth of what O earn is not my rival. we can't outsource fry cooks.
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 3:53:10 pm)

Myk Murphy:
exactly my point, in a way. some projections are showing a lack of skilled and unskilled workers. that's why we won't get serious about our mexican border... simply put, they're needed.
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 3:55:21 pm)

Myk Murphy:
i'm right now listening to the church's "box of birds". amazing version of "cortez the killer".
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 3:56:30 pm)

Myk Murphy:
be back later. got a burn a backup cd on this pc.
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 3:58:23 pm)

Heruka:
no, Myk, they're not. the cost of hiring an illegal is far greater than the $2 a day people pay them. first, there's the strain on healthcare, secong, there's the worker sending the capital back to Mexcio, the $2 a day pay has far reaching consequences than you might want to imagine.
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 3:59:05 pm)

Heruka:
the numbers of illegals in my area has been in decline the last few years, as more companies move to mexico. there are simpkly no jobs left for them to steal.
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 4:02:18 pm)

Heruka:
it's just none of what people say(including you) and what I see are matching up at all.
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 4:04:03 pm)

Heruka:
how come we didn't need all these low wage earners back before the 90's?
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 4:05:10 pm)

Heruka:
is it because now that they have taken over so many jobs that the pay scale for these jobs has declined so dramatically that it's no longer a viable living job for Americans?
(Fri Aug 29, 2003 - 4:06:03 pm)

Chewing Wax:
Haven't you been paying attention? Mexico is losing jobs to Asia. It's a major crisis. Those poor bastards were skipped right over in the cheap labor market.
