Myk Murphy:
i can assure you, however, that i originally thought that harry potter was just kid's stuff. when i saw how many adults were reading it, and the endorsements from adults i know, i gave it a shot. one other cool part about the books is that they are genuinely funny.

Heruka:
except for Disney of course. they get laws to work around their copyrights.

Heruka:
I'm out!
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 4:49:29 pm)

Myk Murphy:
heh heh, it's a long way from barney to harry. i'm just pleased that america's young readers (and everywhere else on earth) are reading a "kid's" book that encourages a love of the english language. love of language is the one great thing that the british can teach the rest of the english-speaking world.

Myk Murphy:
later, H.

Sleepy:
Jim Carrey is seriously creepy in The Cable Guy.
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 5:20:19 pm)

Sleepy:
If I were going to judge a book, I would read it first.
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 5:20:47 pm)

Sleepy:
Has this kind of book frenzy ever happened before?
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 5:28:09 pm)

Decoy:
Heh, yeah, a couple weeks ago with Senator Clinton.
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 7:37:09 pm)

Decoy:
Its been a big month for fiction.
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 7:40:23 pm)

Myk Murphy:
that's funny, decoy, and so true. does anyone believe that hillary's book is candid? i can't blame her.... work the spin in your own favor, and see if you can manipulate public opinion. to take a stab at sleepy's question, the stats seem to indicate that nothing like this has ever happened before.

and, yes, jim carrey is very creepy in the cable guy. poor ending, but an interesting film.

Myk Murphy:
harry potter is a genuine phenom, as well, since the publishers have done nothing but prevent advance copies from going out. the public has been waiting for quite a while, now, and so who can blame them for lining up to get a copy? i didn't have to go through much trouble to get a copy today: mrs murphy and i had lunch near a bookstore, so we went in to get it but they only had copies on reserve for pre-order customers. the local B&N had a few cartons of books for non pre-order folks like us. also, the local best buy electronics store had them, too. bought the new jack johnson cd today... more of the same: ben harper gone mellow by way of G Love but without the delta blues knockoff thing.
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 9:07:14 pm)

Decoy:
Are you Delta Blues fan?
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 9:10:12 pm)

Heruka:
aah, the wonders of a perfect marketing campaign. isn't it amazing?

this title comes out this week.

(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 10:57:21 pm)

Heruka:
sadly, more and more the news seems to becoming a big advertisement for movies and books and things. I'd like to say it's just my cynicism reading into this, but I think that would be a bit too optimistic I fear. when the news reports nightly on Fox's 'who wants to be a star' show, something's gone terribly wrong.

we have a cheesy tv program trying to create talentless celebrities, then we have media outlets reporting the fake celebrities as if it were news. someone fucked up the wiring big time.

Heruka:
Blues, you want Blues? two cd's you must pick up for any Blues fan. or rock fan. or any music fan really.

Heruka:
cute tractor/ growing crops? say, that's a big pole barn. I bet you can put plenty of poles in there.
(Sun Jun 22, 2003 - 9:26:13 am)

Decoy:
Plenty, yes. You really have to see it to believe it. Its bigger inside than outside. Growing crops? Just dare me. That's the life for me.
(Sun Jun 22, 2003 - 9:29:22 am)

Decoy:
I would need a bigger tractor, though. Ruff.

Heruka:
western NY and Pa has rolling hills. I can see even see that in that pic. Ohio doesn't. we're the beginning of the great plains that stretch to Colorado or Wyoming ot somewhere out there. Frankly, it's a little boring geographically.
(Sun Jun 22, 2003 - 9:38:58 am)

Decoy:
Yeah, the flatness really starts in earnest between Rochester and Buffalo, though its hilly to the south in the finger lakes region, I'm just east of Rochester.
