(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 6:48:44 am)
Decoy:
I have. They're a quick juvenile read. Not awful, but entertaining.

Myk Murphy:
i've read all the harry potters, and i think i'll buy the new one today. as you go further into the books, they become a lot less juvenile. sure, the themes of growing up and conquering demons have been addressed before, but this way is particularly fun. some reviewer said that the new book is even more "adult" ...i think rowling has decided that she can write for all audiences. probably right... there are quite a few words and sentences that kids will not figure out too quickly.

i just noticed today that my cat is slightly balding around his eyes. today he seems really old and every time he goes to clean himself he loses his balance and topples over.

Heruka:
I dunno, Decoy. Somehow I get the feeling that Harry Potter readers aren't that exciting of a bunch. A bit geekish me thinks.

it's a little hard to generalize on the "harry potter reader", heruka. the initial print release is around 8 million copies in the US alone. the best generlization is the broadest: the average HP reader is human, either male or female, and is able to read, unless they're too young to read, in which case someone reads to them.
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 2:42:59 pm)
Decoy:
Myk Murphy, on spot, as usual.
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 3:18:28 pm)
Heruka:
8 million eh? I didn't know there was that many geeks in the US. but it's nice at least to see them pulled away from Star Trek for a while. of course, the kids can't be considerd geekss, the can but I won't. geekiness is something a lot of them will grow out of over time. it's the adults that read these books that I don't understand. there's something horribly wrong when someone over the age of 18 reads these flights of fantasy books geared towards kids. horribly wrong.
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 4:38:25 pm)
Myk Murphy:
i do my best. i have a copy of the book, despite not having reserved one. my neighbors across the street had it delivered via fedex this morning.
in other, much more important news, one of my sisters had her first baby last night. it's a boy. mother and son are doing fine.
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 4:39:27 pm)
Heruka:
a boy eh. is it named Martin?

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- A New York teenager alleged on Thursday that teachers violated her civil rights when they suspended her from school for wearing a "Barbie is a Lesbian" T-shirt.
Lawyers who filed a lawsuit on her behalf in Manhattan federal court said 14-year-old Natalie Young is openly lesbian and that a teacher laughed at her, calling the garment and its reference to the popular Barbie doll "inappropriate."
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 4:43:05 pm)
Myk Murphy:
that goes to show what little you know about the books, heruka. the "magic" portion of the book is only a tool for the stories, and not the focus. "hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry" is closely modeled after your classic british private boarding school (what the british called, oddly enough, a "public school"). in such a place, away from parents, a young boy (wizard or not) has to grow up, find parental figures, find friends, find enemies, and deal with it all. it's an interesting read, and the magic nature of the place allows for an engaging plots with few limits.

Heruka:
has this teenager, her lawyer, or her parents considered that bringing this out in public has opened them up to a lawsuit by Mattel, or whoever owns the Barbie copyright?
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 4:44:15 pm)
Myk Murphy:
no, not martin.
(Sat Jun 21, 2003 - 4:44:58 pm)
Myk Murphy:
the t-shirt maker has a greater liability, but mattel has lost a similar case when the band "aqua" made the "barbie girl" song. when your product becomes a pop culture touchstone, you lose exclusivity. rightly or wrongly.
