From that article, my favorite part was here:
European Commission President Romano Prodi said he was saddened rather than angry with the candidates because their pro-Americanism was a signal they had failed to understand that the EU is more than a mere economic union.

in short, joining the EU under their terms means that you aren't allowed to believe that the US is good, and you can't support them anymore. i was wondering when someone would outright threaten their EU membership. chirac just made a horrible error... even schroeder will now need to keep his distance from this.
