yeah. license for HAM.I may just skip the SSB. and go direclty to a sat. phone. I can email from both, but the phone is better for safety reason. I can call from the top of a mountain on Nuku Hiva or a beach on St. Barts and brag to my brothers or someone. Also, if we have to abandon ship, the phone will be best. I really like the phone. but I can recieve weather faxes and such from SSB.

greetings, all. my advice about satellite phones is that heruka has finally the one practical use for the things. last i heard, the globalstar folks were the only reason the iridium satellites weren't trashed at all. a shakily funded operation desperately in search of a business case to exist. i'll be impressed if your phone service still works by the time you're done sailing to god knows where. have a good radio backup. i recommend a GSM world phone, in general.

Those satellites are failing one by one, too. I think its up to 13 down right now. Though it was a good deal to buy those birds for pennies on the dollar, its just a matter of time - no one will foot the bill to maintain the network. That was one of the best examples of insane business plans getting sucked up in the tech boom.
