The fate of the straying Irish in America is as horrific as the moon is celestial. Ned Finigan, once the strongest man in Ardfinnan and a descendent of local Irish heroes, succumbs to the allure of money and opens a profitable tavern with his wife, Ally McGoo, whom he married aboard shop en route to New York. Ned's desire to acquire wealthy connections leads him to befriend the vile Henry Herbert, however, who encourages him to drink. Ned soon becomes an alcoholic and a wife beater, decaying in body as well as spirit. He dies a ghastly death of delirium tremens: "It took four men to hold him in the bed, and he fancying he saw all kinds of horrible shapes, and fairly out of his mind"
