Blame the stupid TV show, "Roots." It filled everyone's head with myth. Problem is that fictional myth can just as powerful as a real one. Especially when cultural unity in the face of disenfranchisement is in question. Did they not teach us that the blacks in africa were sold to the white traders by other blacks. Am I the only one who remembers that? You know, that 'school' thing. That was the result of their tribal wars, you get sold into slavery. No one went into the jungle and harvested up some slaves. Fiction. SO... if any reparations are to be made they should come from africa to the American Blacks and be paid in the original currency that they took in exchange, plus interest. But I don't see where the Gold Coast and Ghana, et al. are going to get that much wampum.

just last week, there was a small rally near the capitol for reparations and other foolishness. perhaps it overly generalizes, but most affluent or semi-affluent black folks are a bit embarassed by this sort of thing. heruka is right to say that discussion of such a thing actually legitimizes it, and i agree that it should cease immediately. continuing the self-destructive culture of victimhood keeps the underclass in its "under" status. as for the growing black middle class (quite large in the dc area), its success is worth noting, and if it avoids excessive debt and expenses, it will continue to succeed.
