Well, All I know is it's done in a 1930's serial type evil master of the universe thing staring the dead Laurence Olivier whose image rights the family will sell to anyone for fifty thousand dollars.

Apparently they're strapped for cash. It was Jude Law's idea. He knows the Oliviers. Or something.

Maybe describing the salt caravans traveling with yaks or sheep in Northern Tibet. Is the tradition of the saltmen still alive? Are there any of those salt-laden yak caravans left? What about all the associated rituals, the salt language and the salt songs? And if the caravans do exist, how are we ever to find them in the vastness of Tibet? It should be sung about.

Detlef Sping:
One afternoon we had time to visit the Ramoche temple, which is situated down a little side-street. This temple was founded by the Chinese princess Wen Cheng, who is regarded as an emanation or reincarnation of the goddess Tara, a very important deity in Tibet. She is also considered to be the protector of traders and travelers. In front of this temple stood several trucks, loaded with white or pink salt, and a number of Tibetan men in the prime of life. Their appearance was striking: their hair was interwoven with red or black plaited strands in the khampas tradition, they wore turquoise earrings, silver jewelry and good clothes and they turned out to be salt traders. The place they came from or rather where their trucks came from according to the name on the registration plates gave us a clue which was later to prove very useful.

Shot under extreme conditions in one of the world's most remote locations, "The Saltmen of Tibet" is a work of sublime beauty and epic proportion. Documenting the ancient traditions and day-to-day rituals of a Tibetan nomadic community, the film transports us into a realm of endless mystery untainted by the tides of foreign invasion or encroaching modernity. Step by step we follow the three-month pilgrimage to the holy salt lakes of the Changtang region. Observing age-old taboos and steadfast homage to the deities of nature, four cartoon men meticulously plan their yak caravan to fetch "the tears of Tara," the precious salt from the holy lakes of northern Tibet. It is said that the salt lakes are the underground's eyes on the universe and only by maintaining goodwill with their powerful goddess may one be guaranteed a bountiful supply of salt. The music is wonderful.
