Heruka:
Ha! our surf is superior to yours. don't let that pic fool you, that wave the guy is riding is actually a 20 footer. the camera is too far away to get a good shot. and the guy is over 60 feet tall. we're tall here.

(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 10:21:41 am)

Decoy:
I dunno, I don't feel any different.
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 10:24:57 am)

Decoy:
Lake Erie surf, that's rich. The lake's like 18 feet deep, how big can the waves get?
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 10:25:47 am)

Chewing Wax:
Actually, I'm relieved if anything.
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 10:26:00 am)

Chewing Wax:
You'd be surprised. I was in some pretty heavy waves a couple times. 10 foot swells.
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 10:26:45 am)

Decoy:
Meters, sorry, I guess its a Canadian measurement - Got the facts: Although the area of the lake is about 26,000 km2 (10,000 square miles), the average depth is only about 19 metres (62 feet). It is the shallowest of the five lakes and therefore warms rapidly in the spring and summer, and frequently freezes over in winter. It also has the shortest retention time of the lakes, 2.6 years. The western basin, comprising about one-fifth of the lake, is very shallow with an average depth of 7.4 metres (24 feet) and a maximum depth of 19 metres (62 feet). Lake Ontario, although slightly smaller in area, is much deeper than its upstream neighbor, Lake Erie, with an average depth of 86 metres (283 feet) and a retention time of about 6 years. Major urban industrial centers, such as Hamilton and Toronto, are located on its shore. The U.S. shore is less urbanized and is not intensively farmed, except for a narrow band along the lake.

Decoy:
So you can get rid of all the pollution in six years. That's good news, eh?
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 10:29:58 am)

Lake Erie:
Figures

LENGTH: 241 miles / 388 km

BREADTH: 57 miles / 92 km

AVERAGE DEPTH: 62 ft. / 19 m.

MAXIMUM DEPTH: 210 ft. / 64 m.

VOLUME: 116 cubic miles / 484 cubic km.

WATER SURFACE AREA: 9,910 sq. miles / 25,700 sq. km.

DRAINAGE BASIN AREA: 30,140 sq. miles / 78,000 sq. km.

SHORELINE LENGTH (including islands): 871 miles / 1,402 km.

ELEVATION: 569 ft. / 173 m.

OUTLET: Niagara River and Welland Canal

RETENTION/REPLACEMENT TIME: 2.6 years (shortest of the Great Lakes)

NAME: The greater part of its southern shore was at one time occupied by the Eries, a tribe of Indians from which the lake derived its name. This name is always mentioned by the early French writers as meaning "cat"; Lac du Chat means "Lake of the Cat." Many attribute this reference to the wild cat or panther. It is widely known for it's fantasic surfing rivaling the best surfing beaches of Australia and Hawaii, especially in Ohio.

Cleveland/Akron = less urbanized. Hmmm.

Chewing Wax:
I'm getting really hungry.
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 10:34:13 am)

Decoy:
I didn't read carefully. It was comparing Hamilton and Toronto to Rochester along Lake Ontario, in fact. Never mind.
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 10:34:38 am)

Decoy:
Lunch would be good about now.

Lunch? I just got a bagel.
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 10:55:56 am)

Chewing Wax:
Aren't New York city bagels overrated?
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 10:59:18 am)

bela:
Most of the time. I'm not a big bagel person. New Yorkers take bagels very seriously. David Bagels on First Ave. in Manhattan is pretty good though.
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 11:00:42 am)

Decoy:
A bagel would be good about now.
(Fri Jun 21, 2002 - 11:01:55 am)

bela:
Sesame bagel with tuna fish from there is really fucking good. There are a few Jew places above 14th on 1st Ave that I've had bagels from that were really good. I'd get them when I waitressed in Grammercy Park - right across the street from where Rick Okasek and Paulina lived. What a time that was.
