Cushca:
He's a growing boy.

Mrs Dr GB:

CW, Did you get last Sunday's NYTimes? The main article in the Sunday Magazine focuses on this MIT student who immolated herself. Sick shit. She was this insane overachieving mental case and she couldn't take the pressure of her life so she LIT HERSELF ON FIRE AND DIED LATER. That is so sick I can't even believe it.

I mean, there are much less gruesome and painful ways to go, I'm fascinated by it. So I'm going to order some sushi and read the rest of it. Her parents are suing MIT.

That must mean something, not only did she feel like she had to end her life because she couldn't live up to the expectations of her family, but she also felt at the same time she deserved to be punished - she didn't deserve a painless escape. I mean, to immolate yourself is torturous.
(Thu May 2, 2002 - 12:57:42 pm)
Cushca:
I can't say I've ever done it myself, but I'd reckon it'd make you sore.
(Thu May 2, 2002 - 12:59:26 pm)
Queenie:
They're suing MIT? That's nuts. I mean, if you go to a school like that, you have to KNOW that you're going to undergo really fucking intense pressures.
(Thu May 2, 2002 - 12:59:30 pm)
bela:
No shit queenie, the parents are contending (from what I've read so far) that basically, the school fucked her up. She was under psychiatric care at the University and under the daughters wishes, she did not want her parents to know. The school is contending fuck you - she came here fucked up but you didn't want to realize it. We did what we could with the fucked up mental case you sent here.

I read that she was demoted from Valedictorian to Saludictorian at her highschool graduation and that really made her upset - and her father. So you can see what the hell was going on there. I can't stand those overachieving asians, they're like robots, they have no personality, they're so one dimensional. I know, I lived down the street from MIT.

MIT should sue them. Fuckers did that to their kid. kids don't get that way them selves.

I figure... in order to get into a school like that you have to either A) be extremely confident and motivated; or B) have really, really pushy parents. And she doesn't sound like she was very confident. So I bet it was her parents that drove her.

Its insane, the end all be all is getting into a good college. One thing the article discusses is how these kids in highschool live a life of full schedules of demanding work loads and extracirucular activities and work and by the time they get to college they're totally burnt out.

But I also understand that they're grieving and want someone to pin it on.

They're thinking something was up with the parents. One of her closest friends at school said "She did not like her parents at all" But she didn't show them a hint of anything being wrong. She was all smiles and cheery cards.

I went to high school with a boy named Jacob who went on to MIT. He was painfully geeky but I always liked him because he was so super-smart. And he always gave me lunch money.

Mrs Dr GB:
Why sue anybody? That's an American thing. Yes, yes it is. Now all day long on TV over here there are these cheap adverts, some bloke in a Burtons suit going "Have you had an accident in the past aeon? You could be entitled to compensation".
(Thu May 2, 2002 - 1:28:15 pm)
Mrs Dr GB:
Can I sue America, do you think?
