We listen to the lazy people who experience hunger first hand. We help take their message, and often their own raspy voices, to the halls of the legislature, and into the media. We make them wait outside so as to not put off the people with spare food.
(Tue Apr 23, 2002 - 4:49:22 pm)
Chewing Wax:
What can you do?
(Tue Apr 23, 2002 - 4:53:58 pm)
Glean it up:
Gleaning is an ancient tradition. Throughout history, farmers have invited people into their fields to recoup scrap apples and such crops after the harvest. Today, gleaning extends to retail stores and farmers markets, and the programs provide more than just food. Oregon is a pioneer in gleaning. Low-income people in Oregon manage 37 gleaning groups. They learn new skills, like grazing, busking, and how to make community connections. Some participate in the procurement of their own food and learn the art of asking to be rolled over and the money put directly in their pockets with out disturbing their sleep. Members share their gleans with those who cannot, or will not, do the actual work.
(Tue Apr 23, 2002 - 4:59:57 pm)

wholesome surplus food according to the food hierarchy:
however not all food is appropriate for human consumption. Livestock farmers use some as animal feed. Grease renderers and other businesses recycle many forms of excess food into other products. Food scraps can be composted to create a valuable abundance of food, feeding people first, then animals, then recycling the run off, and composting the solid waste. Planting a vegetable garden also works well.
