Chewing Wax:
If a peice of shit sells for 140 million dollars, it's still a piece of shit.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:43:39 pm)

Decoy:
Nicely done, H.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:44:10 pm)

Chewing Wax:
Oh, you're a super-hero alright.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:44:32 pm)

Decoy:
I also like to see someone be a master of their medium, or at least competent in it, before they get the big bucks. I can't stand hacks just on principle.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:45:13 pm)

Heruka:
I like art. But I think most of it is so full of itself that the people involved aren't really artists. They're just self absorbed and feel the need to project an image to the public as a means to get attention. Something about smearing a painting of Christ with dog crap tells me to not take these people so seriously.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:46:55 pm)

Decoy:
What no smart-ass crack to that, Q?
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:48:18 pm)

Decoy:
She musta taken a shine to yoos, Heruka.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:48:53 pm)

Queenie:
What makes a "hack" in your opinion? Lack of skill?
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:49:31 pm)

Queenie:
A painting is simply a thing you hang on your wall for decorative purposes. Nothing more, nothing less. Someone like Patty really paints from the heart -- she's just expressing herself with color and shapes and whatnot, in a highly stylized manner with (I think) very attractive results. I would DIE to have one of her pieces on my wall, because I would enjoy looking at it. I like her colors, I like her style, and I think her work is very, very pretty. What's wrong with that? And to suggest that it's "bad" because your four year old could do it is not only insulting to the artist, but also to your four year old who could be a much better artist than you give her credit for.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:51:54 pm)

Queenie:
You would probably hate most of the art I have on my walls.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:52:39 pm)

Decoy:
A hack creates by making small obvious efforts through trial and error until something works; and a hack builds something that works, but is not wholly concieved. For starters.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:54:03 pm)

Queenie:
Anyway, my point is that if Patty was my sister, I would do what I could to support her work. Not for nothing, of course, I would only do it if I got the pick of the show -- which is basically all a patron does. Todd had a patron once, paid his living expenses for six months while Todd prepared for a show in exchange for whatever piece from the show he wanted.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:54:20 pm)

Chewing Wax:
This from a woman who laughed at my poster of the dark side prism. That about sums it all up.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:54:42 pm)

Decoy:
Most of what I have on my walls was painted by my mother. And she's not very good, but I love her.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:55:02 pm)

Queenie:
Well, by that definition Decoy I don't know any artist hacks, though I'm sure there's plenty of them out there. The folks I know really do create from the heart, for the joy of doing it. Which is probably why they're always broke -- they're not deliberately seeking a magic formula for success. Some do well, though. Todd sells pretty well, though the gallery always takes half.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:55:58 pm)

Queenie:
Todd's last group "The Fighter Series" has a pretty interesting back-story.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:56:39 pm)

Queenie:
But I'm too tired to explain and you wouldn't care anyway.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:56:50 pm)

Queenie:
Wax, the prism thing doesn't even relate!
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:57:16 pm)

Chewing Wax:
Oh it relates alright.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:57:57 pm)

Decoy:
If I could survave at it, I would be an artist. I'm romantic that way, too. But then I have mouths to feed and want to get them into a big expensive college so they can see the world free of ignorance. Or something like that.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:58:01 pm)

Queenie:
Explain.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:58:03 pm)

Queenie:
Decoy what would you do if you could do anything?
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:58:20 pm)

Chewing Wax:
I don't feel like trying to explain
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:58:40 pm)

Queenie:
Pah.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:59:13 pm)

Queenie:
I take back what I said about artist hacks -- I do know quite a few musicians who are blatant hacks.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:59:31 pm)

Decoy:
Oh, it relates! Queenie has exposed herself as inconsistent, at best. At worst, a snob who picks on other people's tastes because of her arrogant nature and psuedo-intellect.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 2:59:35 pm)

Queenie:
What's your point?
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 3:00:02 pm)

Heruka:
Perhaps art is simply above human perception. Too great of an entity for a single mind to comprehend. This would explain the differences in opinion.

Maybe not.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 3:00:19 pm)

Queenie:
I was only teasing wax because he had a Pink Floyd poster on his wall, and I thought that was funny. Just like if you came into my office you would laugh at me because of my Wham picture on the wall.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 3:00:37 pm)

Decoy:
Anything? I just don't know. There's so much.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 3:00:45 pm)

Chewing Wax:
I need more drinks. Heruka is making too much sense.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 3:01:42 pm)

Queenie:
Heruka I think people think too much about art. It's decoration. Like, OK I remember a scene from that movie Pollack when Ed Harris was going off about how people were always picking his work apart, trying to find the "meaning" and doubting his validity as a real artist since all he did was dribble stuff onto canvas, and he said, "I don't get it. People don't stand over a beautiful flower bed and tear their hair out trying to figure out its meaning!" That's a paraphrase. Anyway, I think people who try really really hard to give their art meaning and make it "deep" are the hacks.
(Thu Mar 7, 2002 - 3:02:33 pm)

Queenie:
Those are the pretentious ones, IMHO.
