Chewing Wax:
Yes. Duke from Doonesbury has always been very closely based on HST. Much to HST's disgust.

Queenie:
By the way, I picked the RH quote to use at the beginning of the book. After much deliberation, I chose the first verse of Queen Elvis: People get what they deserve, time is round and space is curved, honey have you got the nerve to be queen elvis. It could break your mother's heart, it could break your sister's heart, coming out's the hardest part when you're Queen Elvis.
It fits the story perfectly, especially the character Frank.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:26:50 pm)
Queenie:
Hmm...You think HST would like that!
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:27:15 pm)
Chewing Wax:
That's a good quote. I read HST thinks Trudeau should get his own character and stop using his.

Myk Murphy:
hello folks. good story, queenie, and we can all relate to that awkwardness when someone contacts you... and you find out how badly they've fucked up their lives. part of you might want to help, but our instinct is to run like hell. we should obey that instinct, usually.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:39:56 pm)
Decoy:
So much for fear and loathing on the campaign trail
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:42:13 pm)
Chewing Wax:
I'm getting on the press train and covering this campaign. Who wants to vouch for my credentials?
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:43:59 pm)
Queenie:
Yeah but Trudeau's whole thing is to create characters based on real people but in a total fantasy world. He's genius! I would be totally thrilled to have someone like that make a character out of me!
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:44:25 pm)
Queenie:
Oh, and thanks Myk. Where were you earlier when these bastards were teasing me? Ah well.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:45:10 pm)
Myk Murphy:
i'll vouch for your interest in this, which is more than i can say for my own... the boring and bloated political establishment has their boys up at the top. democracy? hmmmm..
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:46:33 pm)
Chewing Wax:
You have to understand where Thompson is coming from. His first person narative is using a character loosely based on his own life. Trudeau basically stole it. HST is a writer, but the character Trudeau stole was the same character HST uses in all his work. So, you can see the problem. Maybe.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:46:48 pm)
Queenie:
Now THAT'S a gun!
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:46:58 pm)
Chewing Wax:
What do you mean "these bastards"? It was just Cushca.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:47:23 pm)
Queenie:
And one helluva sweater, too!
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:47:35 pm)
Queenie:
You weren't even here. It was cushass and decoy.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:48:10 pm)
Myk Murphy:
no, i'm gone more often than here... which is a drag, cuz it's all work-related. don't let this happen to you.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:48:32 pm)
Queenie:
My friend said that if voting really changed anything, it would be illegal.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:48:33 pm)
Chewing Wax:
Oh yes, Decoy aka pungo. Him too, the bastard.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:48:45 pm)
Queenie:
Back to the trudeau thing, it's not like plagarism....I mean, it's a caricature...No one would see it any other way. Like Weird Al. That's what he does. Nothing is more fun than poking fun at pop culture.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:50:14 pm)
Queenie:
WHOA!
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:50:43 pm)
Decoy:
Ralph art.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:51:12 pm)
Queenie:
"The hallucinations have stopped, finally, thank god..."
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:51:12 pm)
Chewing Wax:
"We killed like champions"
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:52:02 pm)
Queenie:
HST can't possibly take himself THAT seriously!! His life already imitates art. Like some sort of freak show fairy tale...
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:52:04 pm)
Myk Murphy:
yeah, there's no getting around the fact that HST is already "damaged goods". you can't copyright freakishness, despite the best attempts.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:53:26 pm)
Queenie:
Freakishness should be shared, not hoarded!
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:54:49 pm)
Queenie:
Gotta get back to work, fellas.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:54:58 pm)
Chewing Wax:
Duke is my favorite character. See you later Queenie.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:55:22 pm)
Decoy:
I was trying to be somewhat understanding, actually, Queenie; even, as much as Cushca delights me. 'Not my fault if you dont get it. Likewise, back to the Trudeau thing. I've always thought the Duke thing was hilarious and much easier to swallow that REAL HST. That's probably the reason I was never indignant at the ripp off that it is. I'm kinda rethinking it now. How would you feel if you were a writer, worked in the political arena, and someone made a TV show, ostensibly about you and your politics, and then portrayed you without regard to the (semj) reality that you represent and the hard work you did in creating a genre. Wax is right, its not plagarism, its stealing your soul, for fuck sake.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 3:59:00 pm)
Queenie:
Maybe, but it has done no harm.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 4:00:39 pm)
Queenie:
I find things more forgivable if they are clever and done with great creativity. Like when they play commercials in the movie theater. I don't mind if they're highly entertaining.
(Thu Mar 9, 2000 - 4:01:53 pm)
Decoy:
Its like if the Monkees were only entertaining because they where a facsimile of the Beatles. Imagine that!
