...LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING MONDAY THROUGH CHRISTMAS DAY... BANDS OF LAKE EFFECT SNOW ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN MONDAY MORNING, GENERALLY NORTH OF BUFFALO, THEN SETTLE SOUTHWARD TO BUFFALO AND NEARBY SUBURBS LATER IN THE DAY. THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE ACROSS THIS AREA MONDAY NIGHT AND CHRISTMAS DAY. CONDITIONS ARE UNSTABLE ENOUGH FOR THUNDER AND LIGHTNING TO ACCOMPANY THE LAKE EFFECT BANDS.
ACCUMULATIONS THROUGH CHRISTMAS DAY COULD EASILY REACH 1 TO 2 FEET IN THE MOST PERSISTENT BANDS. AT THIS TIME IT APPEARS THAT THE SOUTHTOWNS AND THE SKI AREAS OF ERIE COUNTY WILL ESCAPE ANY HEAVY SNOWFALL THROUGH CHRISTMAS DAY. AREAS EAST OF BATAVIA AND NORTH OF LOCKPORT AND MEDINA ARE LIKELY TO SEE MUCH LESS ACCUMULATION AS WELL.
HOLIDAY TRAVELERS SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR HAZARDOUS WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS AND THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING STRANDED.
UPDATES ON THE STORM PROGRESS ARE AVAILABLE IN SHORT TERM FORECASTS /FPUS71 KBUF OR BUFNOWBUF/ WHICH CAN BE VIEWED ON OUR WEBSITE AT WWW.NWS.NOAA.GOV/ER/BUF OR HEARD ON NOAA WEATHER RADIO.
