U.S. foreign policy 'soaked in blood' women's conference told
By BRUCE CHEADLE

OTTAWA (CP) - Terrorist attacks on the United States cannot be used to coerce Canadian women into backing a U.S. foreign policy that is "soaked in blood," a women's conference heard Monday.
"There will be no emancipation for women anywhere on this planet until the Western domination of this planet is ended," Sunera Thobani told about 500 delegates at the Women's Resistance Conference. Thobani, a university professor and former president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women, was among opening speakers at the three-day conference addressing the issue of women and the justice system. The Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies arranged the conference.
Hedy Fry, the federal secretary of state for multiculturalism and the status of women, began the day with a call for women to speak out against inequality.
"This conference is about breaking the silence," Fry said.
"I can read what is going to be said about this conference: a bunch of radical feminists got together and they started to diss everyone."
Minutes later, Fry sat on the podium while beside her Thobani delivered a speech that repeatedly brought most of the hall to its feet in applause.
"Today in the world the United States is the most dangerous and the most powerful global force unleashing horrific levels of violence," Thobani said.
"From Chile to El Salvador to Nicaragua to Iraq, the path of U.S. foreign policy is soaked in blood."
Thobani said she feels the pain "every day" of the thousands of dead and missing in the attacks Sept. 11 on New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
"But do we feel any pain for the victims of U.S. aggression?" she asked.
U.S. authorities have named Osama bin Laden, the Saudi multimillionaire turned Islamic extremist, as the chief suspect in the suicide hijacking plot. The administration of President George W. Bush has been pressing the hardline Islamist regime in Afghanistan, where bin Laden is in hiding, to hand him over or face military consequences.
The polygamist Taliban regime is among the most repressive toward women in the world - denying them the right to work, go to school or show their faces in public - but Thobani dismissed the notion that America might be on the side of women's rights.
"It's really interesting to hear this talk about saving Afghani women," she said. "Those of us who have been colonized know what this saving means."
She ended the speech to a standing ovation when she called on the Unites States to learn the lessons of history.
"The West for 500 years has believed that it could slaughter people into submission and it has not been able to do so. And it will not be able to so this time, either," she said.
Fry left the conference shortly after Thobani's speech

Mrs Dr GB:
Ah, tales of terrorism. Come to London. The IRA are forever on sprees. And no-one gives a flying goddamn about us. Oh no. Oh no they don't. But I won't get started. I began to talk about this on the tube the other day and Cushca said that my eyes started rolling around in my head.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 5:27:51 am)

Mrs Dr GB:
What's the name of your band Myk? I will search for mp3s and download them. And will offer my considered opinion. That can be my homework for the weekend.

The 2 most common elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 5:40:53 am)

Cushca:
Are you calling my sister stupid?
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 6:08:46 am)

Cushca:
Because if you are, you'd better move house.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 6:22:27 am)

Sleepy:
I think maybe I am in a unique position here because a couple of years ago I heard one of Myk's band's songs. It took about an hour to download on my little laptop. It was guitary and not unpleasant. The song, not the laptop.

Heruka:
Well that's nice... English people will never understand that when it comes to the IRA, Americans really just don't give a damn. Cold, damp and dreary out. Not really in the mood for this stuff today.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 8:31:25 am)

Heruka:
Stuff being of course the previous cold, damp and dreary.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 8:32:18 am)

Cushca:
Fuck off and die Heruka.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 8:45:28 am)

Cushca:
You really are such a dumbfuck, paddy cunt.

bela:
I hate to say it Cushca, but I think Heruka is right. No one here really cares about the IRA. Over it pretty much. They are assholes though, blowing up the tube and whatnot.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 9:56:07 am)

Heruka:
I think it has something to do with the fact that a huge portionof Americans are Irish descent, and the way the Monarchy watched their ancestors starve and die. And laugh. And while this was going on, actually put into place laws that even made th situation worse. So if a few English die every now and then, so be it..
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 9:56:20 am)

Heruka:
The pub opens in an hour, I am there.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 9:58:11 am)

bela:
That was harsh. I don't think thats the reason either.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 9:59:32 am)

Detlef Sping:
Have they unstrapped your jaw?
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 9:59:45 am)

Chewing Wax:
I care about the IRA. Fuckers. But it's apples and oranges. I'm no expert, but they have a clear cause, they always take credit for their asshole behavior, and don't they more often then not call in a warning first? I hope this isn't too politically incorrect. I think orange would tear my head off.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 10:01:28 am)

Chewing Wax:
If I sound stupid and ignorant, it's because I am.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 10:01:47 am)

Chewing Wax:
Maybe I should have said anything. Sorry. Pretend I remained silent.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 10:02:04 am)

Detlef Sping:
Me too.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 10:02:07 am)

bela:
Oh shut up. You don't care about anything but your stupid tractor and your tomatoes.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 10:02:56 am)

Chewing Wax:
I know that Heruka's comments were incredibly offensive to me. That much is clear. But, that's what he was trying to do.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 10:03:17 am)

Detlef Sping:
I feel like Idaho.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 10:03:34 am)

Mrs Dr GB:
That's quite alright. You are neither stupid nor ignorant. They do call in warnings, yes. But if I phone you up and say "Hey there, I'm going to sneak into your house and cut your head off" I don't think that in a court of law that would get me pardoned. Maybe it would. Does anyone know a good lawyer?
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 10:03:54 am)

bela:
Time to get my eyebrows waxed again.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 10:04:13 am)

Mrs Dr GB:
Heruka reminds me of Thatcher. I disagree with pretty much everything that leaves his head; but you have to admit, at least he's honest about all that shite. It's quite refreshing. In a bastardy way.
(Fri Oct 5, 2001 - 10:04:39 am)

Mrs Dr GB:
You wax your eyebrows? A simple pluck or two every day would keep them nice and tidy.
