For American readers, Mr. Dressup was a long-running children's show in Canada on CBC-TV, lasting as long as Mr.Rogers Neighbourhood in terms of longevity. It was along similiar lines. Mr. Dressup hung out with two puppets, one a small boy named Casey and the other, a dog named Finnegan. The show was a huge success amongst children, who came to love Casey and his whispering dog Finnegan as though they were real. This show jumped the shark when, in a feeble attempt to "update" the show and give it a "90's" look (trying to capitalize on the popularity of Elmo on Sesame Street), they replaced Casey and Finnegan, and the puppeteer who brought them to life, AFTER MORE THAN 25 YEARS OF SUCCESS! The show's ratings, which had been on a bit of decline, promptly plummeted. It felt like having Shari Lewis without Lambchop. Ernie Coombs, who played Mr Dressup, retired soon afterward.

Ohhhhh, Ernie Coombs, I heard that somewhere before. Can't quite place it though.

I watched Mr. Dressup throughout my formative years. It wasn't until my mid-20's that I realized that Casey & Finnegan were not truly separate "people". I mean, they were the separate arms of ONE puppeteer (which makes financial sense, I guess). But what about their individual personalities? I've now come to the realization that I was living a lie all these years.
