Wow! Wowowowowow! I've only ever sent one query letter in my life re: Frank Principle to this one film company and only because they're very un-Hollywood and the only ones that I felt would 'get it'. There is a producer there who is like my idol. They have a history of letting the auteurs run wild... so I sent them a letter months and months ago. Today I got an email... they want to read it! THEY WANT TO READ IT!!!! WOO HOOOOOOO! Too bad I've only got 20 pages of the revision done!

This is the most exciting thing EVER!

That's great news Queenie.

Thanks Wax! I was very clear in my query letter that we aren't looking to SELL the piece but rather we're looking for funding and assistance in MAKING the piece. Absolute ideal situation would be if they sent us a producer - someone to handle the money and legal garbage and whatnot. They have a reputation for non-interference, which is the only reason I wrote to them in the first place.
(Thu Jun 28, 2001 - 4:12:39 pm)
Queenie:
They really do make some damn fine movies, and on shoestring budgets no less.
(Thu Jun 28, 2001 - 4:14:42 pm)
Queenie:
Though since "Boys Don't Cry" won Oscars I'm sure they carry more clout than they used to.

What if they like it and offer you a shitload of money? Would you sell it?

If they wanted to find their own director and whatnot, I might be cool with that if I could at least work in art direction or production design. I'd take less money and an influential creative position on the crew. Provided they kept it in Portland. But they'd HAVE to keep it in Portland 'cause it was written to take place here... I don't know... so many things could happen.
(Thu Jun 28, 2001 - 4:19:12 pm)
Queenie:
But see that's the thing with this company.. they work with first-timer writer/directors all the time. They have launched many director's careers that way.
(Thu Jun 28, 2001 - 4:19:49 pm)
Queenie:
And they're in New York which is awesome, away from the Hollywood nightmare.
(Thu Jun 28, 2001 - 4:20:12 pm)
bela:
It sounds like it should take place in Portland, or maybe Hell's Kitchen.
(Thu Jun 28, 2001 - 4:20:22 pm)
Queenie:
Actually the setting is never stated in the script, it's always referred to as "The City", which we did intentionally. But I wrote with Portland locations in mind.

I opened with a "I would like you to read" bit while plugging my Project Greenlight Top 250 status, then I stated the synopsis of the story, then I threw in some quotes from reviewers such as "quirky gem of a masterpiece" and "addictively charming, poetic personality" and stuff. Then I closed with my intentions - seeking funds and support to make the movie in Portland.
