Hey Wax--have you read both collections? The new one is good, but the first one (collecting his letters during his Air Force days) was extremely good.

Queenie:
Is it "Fear and Loathing in America"?
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:06:35 pm)
Queenie:
Something is really wrong with amazon.com.

Chewing Wax:
The Curse of Lono is another good one. You figure he's got to be making the whole thing up because it's too weird, but there at the end is a photo of him, standing by his giant marlin holding his Somoan war club. We killed like champions.

"....in America" is the new one. "The Proud Highway" is the first one. Good stuff.

Queenie:
I tried to read "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" but I gotta tell ya I couldn't get through it. So many of the events he refers to were slightly before my time and he spoke of them with the assumption that everyone knew who and what he was talking about, which I'm sure everyone did at the time, but too hard to read 20 years later.

"The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" is my all-time fave HST.

He's also got another politcal book covering the Clinton campaign called "Better than Sex." It, also, is pretty good.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:09:02 pm)
Chewing Wax:
No. It's The Proud Highway.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:09:09 pm)
Queenie:
I didn't know he was writing so much lately. Where've I been?
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:09:44 pm)
Chewing Wax:
Sorry. That was late. In America is letters too huh? I thought it was another collection of essays. Must purchase now.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:09:55 pm)
Queenie:
Every image on amazon.com is broken.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:10:06 pm)
rOb!:
Yeah, the new letters collection covers the Vegas period. There's a ton of letters between him and Oscar Acosta (the lawyer), and they are truly hilarious.

There's some weird shit going on.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:11:28 pm)
Queenie:
Could you see any images, Wax? Same thing happening on Greenlight site too.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:11:49 pm)
Queenie:
Freaking me out.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:12:08 pm)
Chewing Wax:
It's your browser.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:12:46 pm)
Chewing Wax:
Yeh, the images were fine.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:13:00 pm)
Queenie:
I'm just gonna close that window and try again.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:13:03 pm)
Queenie:
Hmm... still broken images. Madness.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:13:29 pm)
Chewing Wax:
His espn.com collumn is wonderful too.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:13:33 pm)

Netscape too. But I still see this page.

I think it's happy reboot time.

Yeah, it's good to see HST going back to his 'roots.' He started out as a sports writer.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:14:59 pm)
Chewing Wax:
Something is wrong with Amazon though. Amoung the other selections I might enjoy after purchasing Fear and Loathing in America are five books by HST, one by Acosta, and "Behing the Smile: My journey out of postpartum depression" by Marie Osmond.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:15:48 pm)
rOb!:
Have you read "Songs of the Doomed"? It covers his 1990 arrest for drugs, rape and explosives charges.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:16:13 pm)
rOb!:
I've got both of Acosta's books. They're highly enjoyable, but nowhere near as deep and entertaining as HST's.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:17:52 pm)
Chewing Wax:
I have it but I haven't read the whole thing yet.
(Thu May 3, 2001 - 2:19:37 pm)

Time for a late lunch.
