Some started even earlier. Back when I was a kid, no one started until the day after labor day, as it allowed teens to work at local amusement parks and pools until the true end of summer. It changed to align with standardized testing schedules, although the kids are still killing time after the tests near the end of the year. Maryland reestablished the post labor day rule recently to boost vacation revenue in the state. I think it's the right thing to do. Either memorial day or labor day should be contiguous with summer break, but in our commonwealth neither long weekend is so aligned
